It was a battle between my confused cyan grey eyes and furious blue one's.
I stood in the hallway having a stare-off with Aaron. I wonder why he looks like he was about to rip me off piece by piece and dump my body in the lagoon for the fish to feed on. By now, half of the whole school was gathered in the hallway.
"What, in the name of God, is wrong with you?" He shouted, breaking eye contact.
Whew, finally! I don't think I would have lasted any longer in that staring contest.
I was taken aback by his sudden outburst but I quickly composed myself. "Hey, why are you acting like a girl who is on her period? You're supposed to be happy that-"
"You must be out of your mind if you think that I would be happy with what you've done."
"Hey, slow down mister. I didn't do anything, alright. You should be telling that to those two humans beside you. By the way, I was just helping-"
"Help? You call informing the whole school about the problem between me and my friends, help?"
I hold my hand out. "Of course! I just saved you from being used continuously by both of them." I pointed towards the two embarrassed individuals standing behind him.
He scoffed as he took a step towards me and pointed his finger to my face. "You just crushed me!" He yelled.
"What do you mean? I just let you know what's going on because obviously, you are being kept in the dark," I replied, rolling my eyes.
"It was way much better with me being in the dark than finding out that my girlfriend is cheating on me with my best friend in this manner," he yelled.
"No way am I going to sit down and just let you ruin your life. Of course not! How can you be okay with that bambino you call a girlfriend and that two-faced backstabbing greedy human you call a best friend play with your emotions?" I said feeling disgusted by just the mere thought of it alone.
I guess you're wondering what's happening. I would tell you. Last week, after facing detention because I told my AP teacher the actual truth that his teaching is slower than my grandmother who always drives below the speed limit, I ran into two students making out in the girl's locker room.
Turned out that, the girl was Macey; Aarons girlfriend and the dude she was locking faces with was his best friend; Riley. On a normal day, I would have just ignored the fact that they were both teenagers and actually couldn't control their brewing hormones-- scratch that, I wouldn't even do that. I've been known to always tell the truth no matter how bitter or sweet it is.
Back to the present, I decided to tell Aaron the truth about his bitch ass girlfriend just this morning before the first period. To be honest, I felt pity for the guy. He loves his girlfriend and thinks that the creature, disguised in the form of a male species, whom he tells his secrets to and many other things is his best friend. I just couldn't stand aside and watch his world crumble, but he seems not to appreciate my effort.
Maybe... I might have gone a little overboard by shouting it in the hallways because I saw him laughing with the devil and his other half.
"You just made me hate two people who are important to me. Don't you know when to shut up?" he said, grinding his teeth with so much force that I feared that they might break and turn into a white substance that could be used for my chemistry project.
I pondered on his words for a few moments. "So, you're telling me that I wasted my time in telling you the truth?"
"Goddamit, Ivy! You're a pain and a walking accident zone. You cause destruction wherever you go!" Aaron said as he pulled on his hair and dragged his hands down over his face.
Yea, that wasn't the first time I've been told that. I'm Ivy Bennett and I've always been known to tell the truth. Why? Because I can't tell a lie.
Was he feeling frustrated?
No way! I should be the one feeling that way because he seems to be flipping off badly at finding out the truth about his dented circle of life with his friends.
"So, I just wasted my time in telling you the truth and saving your ass from a future break up. Is that what you're saying?" I asked him just to be sure.
"You're so oblivious to people's feelings that you don't see how your policy of always saying the truth affects them. You don't know a perfect time, to tell the truth, and even how to deliver it!" He shouted. "You just let the whole school know that I've been betrayed by the two people closest to me. Did you even stop for a minute to think on the shame you've brought upon them?" He asked with a deflated look towards me.
Okay... maybe he was right at some point but I still don't get it. The whole school is going to find out about their situation, I just helped in facilitating the process.
I'm also confused on the whole- how to deliver the news of a cheating girlfriend and a backstabbing best friend to a person.
Like, is there a manual that gives procedures on how to go about it?
"I don't want to see you anywhere near me," Aaron said as he adjusts his backpack on his shoulder and turned to walk in the opposite direction.
He pushed his way through the students who had gathered in the hallway to watch the little argument, ignoring Macey and Riley who had shocked and embarrassing reactions on their faces.
"Forgive me, for trying to save your ass!" I yelled after him.
I turned around and walked towards my locker ignoring the whispers from the students in the hallway.
I have three words for you; I Hate calculus. Having Calculus as the first lesson of the day is an evil idea. Maybe not for other people, but for me, it's a nightmare.
Come on, how do I cope with all this gibberish that's been scribbled out.
What the hell are Integral and limits?!
I have a bone to pick with whoever invented that shit! How can you mix up letters with numbers just with the sole intention of confusing the masses?
I think we need to put a check on the different inventions because they are causing serious damage to certain people—like me, who can't understand a single thing from that shit.
It would please you to know that I had placed my head on my desk and zoned out on the lecture going on. I don't think I can torture my poor little brain with this evil called Integral.
It would be a form of injustice that I'm not going to be a part of.
“Psst!” A voice hissed. “Ivy.”
I know it's my best friend, Gina calling me but I just can't go through it.
“Ivy… Stop. Zoning. Out. On. The. Lecture,” she whispered loudly while poking me on my sides with her pen.
I raise my head from my desk and looked towards my best friend who was sitting beside me.
I pouted my lips before answering her, “I don't think I can go through this hell anymore, this is a torture house and Mr Lawson teaches like someone who has just gone through heartbreak just this morning. It's so boring.”
“Ivy,” Mr Lawson called my name from the front of the class.
Oops! I diverted my attention from Gina towards him and the whole class diverted theirs on me.
Just Great!
“Yes, Mr Lawson,” I squeaked.
“Can you tell the class, what you're discussing with Gina while there is a lecture going on?” He asked.
That's easy. I thought he was going to scold me or probably send me away from the class.
I sat upright on my chair in a bid to explain myself but Gina kept giving me an eye gesture not to do it.
“What?” I whispered to her.
“Do not tell him what we were discussing.”
“I'm waiting for your explanation, Miss. Bennet,” Mr Lawson called impatiently.
Ignoring the protest of my best friend beside me, I shrugged my shoulders.” I was just telling Gina here that your lecture was boring. You're teaching like you just suffered a heartbreak just this morning.”
There was a fleet of laughter from everyone in the class. Mr Lawson had to hit down on his desk with his notes three times to calm the class down.
I wonder what's funny to them.
“Ivy Bennet!”
“Yes…” I squeaked.
“Detention!” He roared from the front of the class making me shriek with fear in my seat.
For other students, now would be a good time to keep quiet and apologize to their teacher but that's their problem, not mine.
“But, why? You only asked a question and I gave you the answer!”
The ferocious look that was sent my way by Mr Lawson was enough to keep me completely quiet.
And then and there, I accepted my first detention of the day. I wonder if I would be able to scale through school today without collecting at least three more from my other classes.
Just so you know, detention has become like a trophy for me in Lakewood high school. There's not a day that I don't go back home without having detention from at least one of my classes.
Why? Just because I tell them the truth!
It's a miracle that I haven't been expelled already.
But that aside, is it wrong to say the truth?
I can't tell a lie and it has been so since I was four years old. My dad would say that I'm just blunt and don't know how to present the truth but I just stuck with the fact that I can't sugarcoat things. I say things the way it is. Lying is a stress to me and whenever I try doing it, it never ends well for me.
I have seen what lies have done to many people. It has destroyed relationships, families, trust and love between different people. Lies have brought down many business empires and it's still eating deeper into the system. After seeing what it did to my family when I was just four years old, I decided and promised myself never to tell a lie.
I slouched down on my seat as I thought of my upcoming detention. No, I wasn't feeling sad, if that's what you're thinking. I was just trying to figure out which manga to read. Guess I would just use the time to complete Demon Slayer.
The door of the classroom suddenly opened, making Mr Lawson stop midway through his lecture.
“Kieran!” He shouted. “You're ten minutes late for this class.”
“Um… sorry sir. I had no idea it was ten minutes past eight already.” Kieran replied without a flinch.
“You see, my watch here–” he continued as he pointed towards the wristwatch that was seated on his left hand. “States that it's exactly eight A.M., not a minute past or before it.” He finished with a grin.
I could tell that he was lying. Kieran has been known for always coming late to class, and he always has an excuse planned out every time.
I wouldn't call it an excuse because that's not what it is. He always has a perfect lie sitting at the tip of his tongue. Sometimes, I wonder if his actual name is even Kieran. Don't crucify me but, that's just how bad and good he is at it.
“Are you, therefore, implying that the bell was rung at the wrong time?” Mr Lawson continued his interrogation on Kieran.
“No, sir! I wasn't implying anything of such or whatever it is you were thinking I was implying. I was just letting you know what the time is.”
“Really?”
“Yes…”
“Anyone with a wristwatch in the class should please tell us what the time is,” Mr Lawson declared openly.
“Mine reads twelve minutes past eight,” Gabriel the class prefect stated.
“Same as mine,” Ashley confirmed as a few heads and murmurs were heard from every corner of the class confirming that the time was indeed twelve minutes past eight.
“So, what do you have to say about that?” He asked Kieran. “Are you going to stop the pretence now and admit that you're late?”
“Umm… I just found out that my wristwatch was broken. Sorry about that sir...” Kieran said with a grin plastered on his face.
Everyone could see that Mr Lawson's face was going red. I could imagine the smoke coming out from his ears as the alarms went off like that of a whistling kettle.
“Detention!” He roared.
And there you have it, people. One was sent to detention for saying the truth and the other, for telling a lie!
Just great!
Finally, the last bell of the day sounded to signal the end of classes. I can't wait to get home and complete my saga of Black Clover.
Wondering what that is? It's an anime!
We all filed out of the classroom into the hallway, everyone trying their best to walk quickly out of school.
Teenagers… School always seems like misery to them.
I tried searching for my best friend in the hallways. We had different classes during the last period and promised to meet up with each other at her locker before leaving school.
As I walked towards Gina's locker, I saw that her stance was different. Unlike her usual happy mood, I could see that she was sad with the way her shoulders were slouched, and she was zoning out on her surroundings.
“Gina,” I called her name as I moved towards her.
“Hey, Ivy,” she greeted me with a smile. I could see that she was faking it.
“When did you get here?” She asked.
“Enough time to see that the smile on your face is fake,” I scoffed. Like she could hide it from me.
“Oh,”
“Oh? Is that all you can come up with?” I asked.
“It's nothing,” she waved me off as she continued to lock her locker. I waited for her to finish locking it and when she turned back towards me, I was ready to demand an answer from her before we departed from school.
“You know very well that we are not leaving here until you tell me what's wrong,” I stated firmly.
“Alright!” She said giving in to my demands. “Just promise you won't tell anyone,” she demanded.
“Okay…” I said, my curiosity already activated. I wonder what it is that she wanted to tell me that she had to make me promise.
“Not just okay, Ivy. I need you to promise me,” she stressed out.
“Of course, I promise. You're my best friend, okay? I would never reveal your secret to anyone.” I assured her.
"By the way, why would you even think that way?" I asked.
“Seriously, do you need me to remind you what happened in eighth grade?”
I remember that incident vividly well. It's still implanted in my memory. Gina had just told me that she saw our Gym teacher watching gay porn and made me promise not to tell anyone. But, I had blurted it out in front of the whole school as she told me.
“Okay, I promise not to shout out or tell anyone what you're about to tell me at this very moment,” I said while raising my right hand like I was taking an oath.
“Alright!” She said while taking in a deep breath and drawing me closer, so she could tell me without having other people catch on to what she was about to say.
“I have a crush on Leon,” she rushed out in one breath, making me let out a low gasp.
“What? You mean Leon, the one in the Soccer team?” I asked to be sure.
“Yes…” she squeaked.
“Wow, that's- nice?” I asserted, more like a question.
Pardon me but, I was confused about what to say. Gina and I are not actually at the top of the social ladder in school, so I don't know how she is going to make it with Leon. Although, my habit of always telling the truth has made me quite popular in school, not in a good way. I'm kind of like the popular-unpopular student. Like that even makes any sense.
“Why don't you just tell him, you like him?” I asked, after giving it a little thought.
“Seriously, Ivy. Let's be real here. You expect me to just walk up to a guy and tell him straight on that I like him?”
“Of course! It seems pretty easy and it would stop this your sour mood if you know where you stand."
“Easy for you to say, Ivy. You might be good at telling people exactly what you think about them but it's not the same for other people.”
“Okay… if you can't do it, then I would help you. That's what friends are for, right? To help each other in their time of need.”
“Are you being serious right now? I just told you not to tell anyone and you're thinking of going to tell him.”
“Oops… sorry… must have slipped my mind.”
"Obviously! I'm beginning to think it was a bad idea telling you this."
I think so too.
"I would try my best not to spill your secret," I said to reassure her.
"You had better keep to that promise," she warned.
“Alright, let's just go home. I have lots of episodes to cover, and we've spent a lot of time here, talking.” I whined.
“Umm… don't you think you're forgetting something?” Gina asked while looking at me with amusement.
“What? I don't think so. I ensured I asked Mrs Clara to give me back my manga which I had mistakenly submitted together with my Chemistry test script.”
“You what?” Gina asked as she burst into laughter at my little confession.
"You never cease to amaze me, Ivy,” she continued in between her laughter. “How could you be so stupid as to submit that comic book with your test script? I can so imagine Mrs Clara's face when you asked for it.”
“Now, that's not funny,” I sadly stated. “I almost lost one of my precious manga and just so you know, it's not a comic book, it's a manga book. Note the difference.” I firmly stated.
“Okay, okay, whatever you say, Miss. Manga toons. But, I think you're forgetting something.”
“Umm… I don't think--, oh, shit! Detention!” I cried out as my best friend burst into laughter again.
“I'm ten minutes late already.” I said as I looked at the time on my wristwatch.” Why didn't you tell me earlier on?” I asked her and without waiting for an answer I turned in the opposite direction and made my way to detention on hurried steps.
“See you later, have fun!” She called out making me give her the middle finger.
