Under the Full Moon

The colony was under attack and everyone were caught up by surprise by an enemy pack, and even though they were always alert, this time they didn't have time to be prepared.

It was one of those dark pitch nights, where you can barely see anything without the help of the moonlight.

In the middle of the East Forest, there was a battle happening between two wolf packs. It was hard to tell which wolf belonged to which pack, except for the scent they exuded.

There were roars everywhere and screams from the ones that didn't have time to transform yet.

“Gerard, grab Selena and get out of here," someone shouted.

It was an elderly woman, with gray hair and sweet, but wise eyes. It was easy to tell that she was very smart. She was trying to avoid the blow of a brown wolf, protecting herself with a metal stick. She hit his head with an immense strength, and the wolf collapsed instantly.

“Hurry up!" she screamed again to the young man from her pack.

He rushed inside the house, dodging the wolves that were fighting on the way.

Selena was the young daughter of the Alpha's pack, Bryce, a short-sighted and tyrannical leader.

Gerard found the child crouched in a corner of her room, trembling and covering her ears.

She didn't have any experience with battles. She was very young and couldn't even transform into a wolf yet. The noises outside were incredibly loud, and each time there was a knock near the room, Selena jumped from the floor.

“Hey, little girl." he said calmly, squatting by her side. “How about we get out of this mess for a while and get an ice cream?"

He tried to sound the most calm possible, but it was starting to feel impossible to keep pretending, since the noises were not a good sign of what was happening outside of the house.

Selena's eyes met his and they were full of tears. Her dark hair was all messy and she was wearing her pajamas, which indicated that the girl should be sleeping before the attack started.

She nodded to his answer, grabbing the hand he was offering her to get up off the floor.

Gerard caught her on his arms and rushed outside the room, taking a detour that led to the back of the house. He prayed that no other wolf got there before him, because that was his only plan.

After running for a while, Gerard thought that the way was clear of danger, so he put Selena on the ground. He looked back and couldn't see anything. It was very dark and he could only count on the moonlight and the lights of a few cars passing on a road nearby.

“Are you ok, kid?" he asked Selena.

  “Yes."

“Do you think you can walk from now on? You're kind of heavy for a young girl, you know?" he tried to make a joke to cheer her up a little bit.

She smiled, but with a blink of an eye, she changed to a terrified face, seeing something behind him.

“Watch out!" she screamed, pointing at someone coming towards them. Gerard only had time to turn and see a very big and furious wolf growling at him.

“Selena, run!" he shouted at her, before turning himself into a gray wolf.

Selena was paralyzed for a moment, seeing the two giant wolves fighting before her eyes. It was when she heard the sound of a stick breaking a bit far from there, that she seemed to realize what she should do.

She started running like her life depended on that, which it did. Her legs weren't very long and as a kid, she didn't have much breath to run a long distance, specially not with her stuffy nose from crying.

The noises behind her seemed to be getting closer, but she did not dare to look back.

The only thing she kept repeating at her mind was “turn, turn", but she knew that wouldn't happen. Specially because she wasn't old enough for that yet and the first time would be very painful.

With those thoughts spinning around her mind, Selena got distracted and tripped on some sort of twig that made her fall on the floor, hitting her head heavily on a rock and blacking out immediately.

The wolf following her stopped running as soon as she fell, almost didn't believing his luck. She was running really fast for a young child.

When he was about to make a move and kill her, he got hit by a massive force on his right side, coming from the direction of the forest. The knock was so strong, that he didn't even see what hit him.

He rolled a few times on the ground, before sticking his claws on the soil, losing speed and getting on his four paws again.

Looking up, he saw a giant female wolf with a white and majestic pelage like the moon. She had shining blue eyes and looked at him with a killing glance.

As soon as he prepared to attack, the white wolf ran towards him, with her jaw open and bit his right shoulder. The wolf growled loudly, and the white wolf threw him a few feet away.

When he fell on the ground, blacked out, the white wolf went towards the unconscious little girl and put her, carefully, on her back.

She took Selena back to her house and put her asleep in front of the door. The fight was already over.

When Grandma opened the door, she saw a sleeping Selena lying on the floor, and when she looked up, she saw the back of a white wolf going in the direction of the forest.

Grandma took Selena quickly to her room and went to the forest, to the place where she saw the white wolf disappear.

That's when she saw a bright light and it had the most beautiful form. She could swear she was staring at the moon. The form was a woman with white long hair, shining blue eyes, and she smiled gently at Grandma.

“Who are you?" Grandma asked, astonished by her beauty.

“I'm the Moon Spirit." she simply replied.

“You saved my granddaughter? Were you the white wolf I saw a few minutes ago?"

The beautiful woman stared at her for a little longer and said:

  “Yes."

She still had that soft smile on her glowing face.

“Your granddaughter is destined to something really big." the Moon Spirit continued.

  “What is it?" Grandma asked.

“When the right time comes, she will unite with my son and bring peace to both packs."

“Your son?" Grandma continued, not understanding exactly what the spirit meant. “Who is he?"

“Eventually everything will become clear. Just protect the child and keep her alive."

Grandma nodded, even though she still had a lot to ask.

She didn't know what destiny had saved for Selena. She feared for her granddaughter's life even more now, but she always felt that the girl had a different energy coming from her. She just couldn't explain why.

  Until that moment.

“Grandma, I'm leaving!" Selena shouted, already passing through the door, not waiting for her grandmother's response.

She walked to college feeling the warm breeze from that morning. That lifted her spirit a little. Selena was always so curious about the different lifestyle of the humans and wanted to understand their world so badly, that she had enrolled in a college nearby.

She always discovered something new in their world, and that captivated her very much.

At the college stairs, she heard someone screaming her name. She turned and saw Maddie coming in her direction.

Maddie was a very beautiful girl, red-haired with honey-colored eyes. She was one of the most beautiful women Selena had ever seen.

Everyone used to say that Selena was incredibly beautiful too, just like her mother. She had her mother's long black hair, her tanned skin and grayish eyes. She saw in a few pictures and they were pretty similar indeed.

Selena and Maddie weren't exactly what they called popular girls, but Maddie always joked that her and Selena were a hell of a pair and that they were underestimated.

Maddie had everything to be an obnoxious person, but she was very humble and a very loyal friend to Selena.

“Hey, gorgeous!" Maddie said when she caught up with Selena on the top of the stairs. “How was your weekend?" Maddie asked her curiously.

“No big deal. I was just busy helping my grandma at home." Selena lied, feeling guilty as always. She always wanted to tell Maddie the truth about her, but she was really afraid of the consequences of that. Specially for Maddie.

Selena was sure that Maddie would understand and would still be her friend despite the fact that she was a werewolf.

But what she was most afraid of was if her father could do something to her friend if he found out that Selena told anything to her.

She wasn't willing to risk that, so she always made excuses for her friend about her private life.

They arrived at the classroom and sat at the chairs at the end of the line. The hours passed really quick, except for the last class.

“Honestly, he's the worst teacher in this place!" Maddie complained, while they seated on a table on the campus' garden.

It was break time, and her and Selena had just gotten out of an awful class.

“Come on! What he actually meant was that I didn't write what he wanted me to write. Why didn't he do it then?" Maddie huffed.

Selena laughed while bitting her sandwich. It was really nice to have those sort of problems. If Maddie only knew what her problems were like.

“Ok, don't panic. Just pretend you're cool. Robbie is coming here with William. And don't look." Maddie added quickly, when Selena got her head up. “Oh, my God! You seriously need to learn some social etiquette."

“What?" Selena looked at her, confused. “You should've said that first then. How would I…"

But she couldn't finish the sentence, because Robbie stopped in front of them, with a blonde guy called William by his side. Robbie was a nice guy from the other class, with green eyes and a curly brown hair.

“Hey, girls! How have you been?"

Selena noticed that William was staring at Maddie like she was some sort of angel or goddess.

“Hi, we're good. Thank you! What about you?" Selena replied.

“Good, good! So, we are going out tonight to the Treehouse Bar. Would you girls like to join us? Some other friends are coming too." Robbie asked.

Selena wished she wasn't eating a sandwich at that moment. What an awkward situation. He was staring a lot at her, and she was getting a bit embarrassed.

While thinking about it, Selena felt Maddie stomp on her feet under the table and looked at her, angrily.

  “Ouch!"

Maddie was giving her a very serious look that would scare Selena if she didn't know her better.

“Er… Yes, sure. We can go!" Selena replied to Robbie, after launching at Maddie the angriest glance she could.

“Ok, nice!" he said, glancing at William and looking at them again. “So, we'll be there at 9 p.m."

“We'll see you tonight then!" William said, while the two of them waved and turned their backs, leaving Maddie and Selena astonished.

“Wow!" Maddie started, after a few seconds of pure silence. “I can't believe he asked you out."

“He didn't ask me out." Selena grabbed another bite of the sandwich, now that she was free to eat it without Robbie's eyes scanning her.

“Oh, God! No wonder you've never had a date before. You are really stupid, my friend." Maddie laughed.

Selena punched her at the shoulder, getting revenge from the stomp earlier.

“They invited both of us. Weren't you here when that happened?" Selena teased her friend, receiving an ugly face back.

“I was here, idiot. But of course he came to ask you out. He just didn't want you to feel pressured, so he came with William too. In this way, it wouldn't feel weird for you to accept."

“You are very knowledgeable for someone that doesn't have that much experience."

Selena tried very hard not to laugh because of Maddie's expression. The girl was almost beating her up.

“Anyway…" Selena continued. “William didn't take his eyes off of you. Did you notice?"

“Come on! Don't underestimate me. I'll have to teach you a thing or two before we go there tonight. I don't want you embarrassing yourself."

Selena didn't feel so offended because it was actually true. She was incredibly stupid at the dating department and had a great chance of embarrassing herself that night, so she agreed, instead of discussing with Maddie.

They both got out of college, and Selena went to Maddie's house to receive a lesson on dates, and to get ready.

Maddie was very eager on dressing Selena up, saying that she didn't know how to dress herself. She picked a long sleeve black dress for Selena.

“Seriously, Robbie will faint when he sees you in this."

“Don't you think this is a bit too much? I'm not used to using dresses." Selena complained.

“You'll have to learn. You need to be extremely beautiful tonight. And it's not that short anyway."

Selena was starting to get nervous, so she stopped arguing with Maddie about the dress. It was easier to agree with her friend than to make her change her mind.

“Hmm… Fine!" Selena said, going to the bathroom with the towel on her shoulder.

She washed her hair, while thinking about how many ways possible that night could go wrong for her.

But what Selena didn't expect was that the night would turn out to be something entirely different.

And it would have nothing to do with Robbie.

When Selena and Maddie arrived at the Treehouse Bar, it was not hard to find where the group was. It was a very nice and casual bar that was attended by college students at the city. It was in the open-air and most of the people stood on their feet, drinking and chatting.

Selena started to feel very nervous. She didn't know anyone that were with Robbie. While they were walking towards the group, William saw them and waved.

Robbie had his back to Selena and Maddie, but when he saw William waving at them, he turned.

“Hey, you came!" he said, approaching the two girls.

“I told you we would come." Selena replied with a soft smile.

“Come, I'll introduce you both to everyone." Robbie passed his arms through Selena's and Maddie's shoulders.

William gave Maddie a kiss on her cheek, leaving the girl completely blushed, but she was very good at pretending she wasn't shy.

Robbie introduced everyone, but when he was about to introduce the last guy, Selena was already looking at him.

At first, she was intrigued because she could sense his smell and could tell that he was different from the others.

Just like her, he was also a werewolf.

Did his friends know? Would he tell them about her too?

But what intrigued her the most was not even that, but the fact that she couldn't take her eyes off of him. He exuded such a strong energy towards her that she felt there was some kind of magnet pulling her in his direction.

Was that what humans called attraction?

He was incredibly handsome and had that bad boy vibe that got Selena very curious and interested. At the same time, he seemed to be very polite with everyone around.

  She was fascinated by him.

His eyes had an amazing tone of dark blue, and he had brown hair, that was also a bit messy, like he didn't care much about it.

“Hi, I'm Lucas." he looked at Maddie and Selena when Robbie was about to introduce him. “Nice to meet you!" he stretched his hands to Maddie and then to Selena.

When their eyes met and Selena touched his fingers, she felt a magnetic strain through her arms, but also an animalistic feeling on her stomach.

What the hell was happening? She had never felt anything like that before.

“Selena." she shook his hand and let it loose quickly, afraid of that magnetism between them.

Lucas had a little smirk on his face, like he knew what she was feeling.

Was that even possible? Did he feel it too?

He didn't seem to be disturbed with her presence like she was with his.

“Do you want a beer?" Robbie offered.

“Yes, sure!" she said with a smile.

She thanked him and took the glass from his hands, taking a huge sip after that. She was feeling her throat very dry and couldn't think clearly with that guy Lucas so close to her.

She searched for Maddie's eyes, trying to have some sort of visual communication, to warn her that she wanted to say something privately, although she didn't know exactly what to say.

What would she say? That she was feeling a weird attraction to Robbie's friend? That she couldn't stop looking at him?

But when she looked at Maddie, she found her friend already engaging in a very intimate conversation with William.

Selena huffed. So she would have to go through that night by herself.

  Thank you very much, Maddie!

“Do you mind if I go to the bathroom real quick?" Robbie asked her. “I already drank like five beers or something!"

“No, of course not. Don't worry about me." she answered, kind of relieved. She wasn't able to give him much attention anyway.

She looked at Lucas again. He was talking to some other guys from the group, and was very friendly and funny. Everyone seemed to like him.

But at that moment, he also looked at her.

His glaze was so strong that she could almost sense his eyes inspecting her like an x-ray machine.

That made her whole body heat in an unknown way.

For a split second, Selena had the feeling that, since he was a werewolf and she was feeling those things about him, maybe he could be her mate.

But what happened after that, made her pretty sure that she was just delusional.

He stopped in front of her, and she hadn't even noticed him coming.

“Did I do anything to you?" he asked, and only then Selena was able to hear his voice properly.

He had the most soothing, but also sexy, voice.

Selena started to feel the heat spreading all over her body and she was sensing a mix of scents: the most delicious human perfume and a natural aroma that reminded her of the smell of early mornings.

“You don't need to be so distant from me. I don't bite." he continued.

Selena looked at him, annoyed. What did he mean? Was that some horrible werewolf joke? And how did he notice that she was trying to stay away from him? She was trying her best to pretend his presence wasn't bothering her.

Lucas was smiling at her, with that perfect smile and those mesmerizing eyes. Why did he have to be such a jerk?

“Do you think that's funny?" Selena replied rudely. He was getting on her nerves with that little smirk.

“Come on! I'm just trying to make a conversation. You seem a little dislocated, I'm just trying to help you fit in."

“Thank you for your concern, but I'm actually fine.“ Selena stated angrily.

“You don't look fine. Actually you seem a little uneasy about me being here."

“Maybe you just had the wrong impression. I don't have any reason to be uneasy about you. I don't even know you." Selena said.

But when she finished the sentence, he was already closer than before. He lowered his head and whispered on her ear, making her whole body shudder.

“Or maybe you do have a reason but don't want to admit it."

He looked at her and winked. That made her heart miss a beat. He was teasing her. He saw right through her, and that infuriated Selena. How could he have so much power over her?

In a fit of rage, Selena shoved him. He looked at her confused, but the smirk continued there on his handsome face.

“Don't flatter yourself." she snapped back. “You're not my type!"

If she wasn't so angry, she would've laughed of that.

How could he not be her type?
