Aubrey's eyes shines brightly when she arrived at her grandmother's house. She's still seven years old but already sensible and mature than the children on her age.
"Aubrey. Sweetie. Come inside. Let your Grandma have a look on you!" the lively tone of her Grandma came from inside the living room.
She's Amelia Sue and only child of Collen Tang and France Sue, the grandparents of Amelio Reinhold: her father. Amelia's husband was David Reinhold: father of Amelio Reinhold and her grandpa.
"Yes, Grandma Amy!" she replied with smiles and walked towards Amelia's direction. Her bow greetings showed her elegance as a young lady of aristocrat family, without stiffing or awkward manners, like it is already on her bone
Amelia smiled and held Aubrey's both hands. "I know that you are being careful and have decided to give me a good first impression but that is not what I wanted to see of you, Aubrey. I want to see you behaving like your real self without minding etiquettes and manners. It is fine doing that for guest or strangers but be yourself when you are here in Sue Mansion. No one would criticize you" she calmly said while caressing the soft little white hands of Aubrey.
She was stunned, "Grandma..." she called and started to tear up.
Yes, her Grandma is right. She wanted to give a good first impression to her Grandma so that her Grandma wouldn't criticize her of having a poor upbringing but after hearing of what her Grandma said, she cried like a baby.
Amelia was shocked of witnessing Aubrey's outburst cry. She smiled and gave her a tight hug.
"Always remember, Grandma is unlike any other aristocrat old ladies who only see the worth of wealth and elegance. As long as you are happy, Grandma is satisfied." she continued and patted the trembling back of Aubrey from crying.
Aubrey nodded and smiled, not a forceful one.
"Mom! I want to eat your pancakes!" a man's voice from her behind, requested. Aubrey was shocked silly upon hearing her father's spoiled side.
Grandma Amy (Amelia) laughed when she heard her son's childish side.
"Alright. I'll cook for both of you. I am sure you are both tired. You could rest for awhile" she said and was about to enter the kitchen but stopped and turned toward Amelio.
"Your room upstairs was recently cleaned and Aubrey's room is located by your room's side" she gently stated and entered the kitchen.
"She's amazing, Dad" she murmured enough to be heard by Amelio.
"Of course, she is! She's my mother after all! And you're grandma!" he proudly said and left.
"Nanny Min! Please escort Aubrey to her room. After that, please help my mother" he said as he headed to his room.
Aubrey was escorted to her room.
Her eyes mouth twitched when she saw her room's pink rose decoration are anywhere, including bedsheets, pillows, blankets, quilt, bookshelves, lamps, walls, study table and chairs and etc. Everything is PINK!!!
Nanny Min feels happy when she saw Aubrey's surprised expression. For her, Aubrey was shocked silly because of the girly decorations. They believed that girls like pink so they decided to decorate her room with PINK!
"Madam Amelia was the one who designed the room. She was longing for a granddaughter before you were born. That's why, when you arrived in this world, she was excited like she's the one who birthed you" she stated while holding herself to laugh. It is obvious that Nanny Min and Grandma Amy are closed to each other like sisters but Nanny Min decided to draw a line of boundary when guests arrived in Sue Mansion.
"I like it!" She lied. She doesn't want to disappoint Grandma Amelia just because of this girly color. Nanny Min was very happy after hearing Aubrey's words.
'Our efforts are paid off!' Nanny Min smiled and nodded to herself. She also helped Grandma Amy decorating Aubrey's room.
"I'll call you when dinner is ready" Nanny Min excitedly exited her room. Her actions showed that she couldn't wait any longer to share Aubrey's appreciation of their decorations with Grandma Amy.
Her eyes wandered around the room while dragging her luggage inside. There is a balcony so she looked outside while looking at the dusk clouds. The sun is settling down the horizon and night is coming.
From the balcony, she could see the mansions of aristocrats. This town is called the Green Everest Town. The aristocrats who are temporarily settling down chose this town because of high standard quality of houses. Anyway, she doesn't care of those aristocrat. She just wanted to peacefully savored the warmth air, blowing the green grass of the Sue Mansion.
Her hair danced gently like greeting the warmth air but, unexpectedly, she felt someone's gazed on her from afar. She looked around and found the owner of that gaze.
A petite young boy stared at Aubrey. He looks like eight or nine years old but with matured upbringing. He is wearing white mini-tuxedo for young boys. His eyes are gentle like free-flowing water without ripples. The street lights illuminated his white soft skin that shows the tenderness. Aubrey was stunned!
'OMG! His skin is girly than mine!' she commented. If ever the boy heard her thoughts, no one knows what he will do!
The young boy couldn't look away from her for thirty seconds. They are both observing each other but stopped when a tall and handsome got off the car. He is the adult version of the young boy but with stern eyes.
The adult man noticed his son's eyes staring at the direction of Sue Mansion. He also looked at and his eyes widened when a young girl is looking on their way.
He doesn't know the identity of the young girl but he heard that Madam Sue's son came back from overseas with his daughter.
He smiled at the young girl and gently give a bow as a greetings. Aubrey did the same with angelic smiles.
"Who is she, Dad?" the young boy asked, still his eyes on that direction.
"I guess, she's the daughter of Amelio Reinhold, the son of Madam Amelia and CEO David. I heard that they came from overseas and just recently arrived" the adult man replied.
He observed his son's expression. His shocked eyes heightened when his son's eyes was gentle while looking at that young girl's balcony and his interest on Amelio's daughter rose up.
"Let's go! Your mom is waiting inside for dinner" he snapped his son's state of mind back to normal.
The young boy walked fast when he heard his father's teasing tone. He also doesn't understand why he stared longer on that young girl but he was certain that he was captivated by the young girl's appearance.
In reality, he doesn't easily get captivated by mere appearance. Even meeting with the beautiful woman in entertainment industry couldn't make his eyes stared for so long but why is he easily attracted to that young girl?
He shook his head without realizing that he walked fast. The adult man is holding himself from laughing in order not to provoke his son's anger. His son is easily provoke by mere words or actions if inappropriate.
Aubrey immediately left the balcony after greeting the adult man while her chest throbbed loudly and her cheeks reddened.
She slapped her cheeks gently to lessen the hotness.
"Young Miss Aubrey, the dinner is ready!" a maid's voice sounded from outside her room after three times of knocking.
"Okay! I'll be there!" she replied and immediately changed her clothes.
When she arrived, the foods are ready while Grandma Amy, Grandpa France and Amelio are talking about the corporation.
She sat between her grandparents and started eating.
"Amelio, have you remember the tradition of our family before turning the age of seven?" Grandma Amy asked while eating her veggie salads.
"Yes, mother. But Aubrey is already seven. I have forgotten about the tradition, mother. We are in modern and advance technology times, who would believe such traditions of ancient past?" Amelio retorted.
Twick! Grandma Amy's right hand left the handle of silver spoon and her eyes are widened.
"Amelio! You knew that each child of family generations were and are required to make a wish on that well! If a child doesn't make a wish, there will be heavenly punishment from our ancestors!" she shouted angrily at her son. She could take that her son doesn't believe on the traditions but disregarding it, is equal to heavenly punishment!
This belief was passed down from ancient generation to the next until on her generation but now, her son is disregarding the tradition. Isn't he afraid of ancestor's wrath?!
"Dear, just say it calmly. We even haven't know that if there is really heavenly punishment if ever a child of our house wishes on that well. How about we let her wish tomorrow morning? She's still seven and haven't getting eight yet. Maybe, there will be no retribution, right?" France calmly said to his wife. Even though, the wishing well was passed down from his bloodline, her wife is the only one who believed it and even if he doesn't believe on the traditions, he still wished there when he was six years old. He just wished that he wanted to become successful businessman.
Yes, he became successful businessman but he believed that he got it because of his sweat and effort.
Grandma Amy calmed down, "Then, tomorrow should be the right time for the tradition. I am hoping that there is no heavenly punishment after it" said uncomfortably.
Even though, the traditions are from Reinhold Family, she's still the wife after all! She has responsibility of letting her children know the Reinhold traditions.
"What would happen if I received heavenly punishment?" Aubrey asked while recalling the stories in a novel about gods and goddesses who sometimes have naughty personality.
"You don't have to worry, Aubrey. No one in the Reinhold Family ancestor underwent heavenly punishment so we don't know if it is real or not. As long as you stated your wish beside the well, the guardian could hear it and message the god. The god will grant your wish, either your wish is fake or real and possible or impossible" Grandpa France said like he himself believed the traditions but that's not the case. He just doesn't want Aubrey being pressured because of heavenly punishment.
"I'm sorry, Mom. I didn't know that there will be such heavenly punishment but let's not think of it or else it might happen. They said, the more you thought about it, the bigger the possibility" Amelio stated. This led the adults changed topics into business but Grandma Amy is silent like she's very uncomfortable and eager to do traditions right now in order to find out if the heavenly punishment is real or not.
"Grandma, who resides beside the Sue Mansion?" Aubrey asked. She knows that her grandma is still thinking of the heavenly punishment so she decided to divert her attention to something else.
Her attempt succeeded, "Oh! They are the Conrad Family. They are most influential family in the region. There's no need to be scared of them. Our business is already widely known nation wide and soon aiming it into an empire. Even though, I sound like I am looking down on Conrad Family but I just honestly stated a fact!" she proudly said while justifying her statement about Conrad Family.
"Grandma, I don't care about their influence nor business. I wanted to know about each member of Conrad Family" she furrowed brows after hearing her grandma's words but eased up after hearing her the last of her words. She doesn't like other people criticizing a person without knowing who they are as a person, not as a tool or thing for business.
"Oh! They are good-looking people. Frederick Bent Conrad owned the Conrad Pharmaceutical Company while his wife is Elise Deritt who owned a jewelry company. They both inherited their family's business that's why it flourish! They also have two sons: Elric and Cedric. Elric is the heir of Frederick while Cedric is the heir of Elise so the brother get along with each other without scheming of getting the other's birth right" she stated each member of Conrad Family.
"Oh!" she exclaimed but realized something from her grandma's words.
"Don't worry, Grandma! I wouldn't seized position of heir from my twin brother Andrew! Because I want to get it by handling it by myself!" she continued then looked at her grandma's reaction. Indeed! That's what her grandma's intention but her worries vanished when she heard of Aubrey's words.
"Good! You're really sensible like your twin brother!" she praised. Well, there is also a family tradition on Sue Family and that is not to let the daughter be the heir of family business because of their belief that man is better at handling businesses. Fortunately, Aubrey isn't the type child who is eager to seize the business like other aristocrat children.
"Dad! Grandma! Grandpa! I'm back!" a seven year's old boy called them while forgetting about Aubrey's presence. They're twins but doesn't get along each other because of her grandma's influenced that man should be one who handle family business.
Aubrey turned silent when Andrew came in. He greeted them but not Aubrey. Aubrey initiated the greetings but Andrew doesn't greet her back.
Aubrey inwardly sighed. She just wanted to get along with her twin brother but every time she approached him, he will get annoyed or irritated and sometimes will get angry. She just let him be. Anyway, she's used to it!
"Your twin sister will be having a wishing well tradition tomorrow. You should be present as her brother" Grandpa France stated. Once Grandpa France opened his mouth, Grandma Amy and Andrew will obey.
"Elder brother, have you done the wishing well tradition?" she asked as she remembered that Andrew was not with her before turning seven.
"You're elder brother is already done with wishing well tradition" Amelio replied while realizing that he often disregarded Aubrey's presence.
"Your father was the one who initiated the wishing well tradition before he went to business trip" Grandma Amy stated and that words sounded like her twin brother is important than her. Amelio was about to explain but he was caught off guard on Aubrey's next question.
"Oh, Then, father. If Grandma didn't talk about the wishing well tradition, when will you hold the wishing well tradition for me?" she nonchantly asked but for the people who heard it, it was like a bomb! They stayed silent.
"My friend invited me tonight for pajama party when she heard that I will be staying here for awhile. I already accepted it. Anyway, the wishing well tradition will be before dusk right?" she changed the topic but the topic is like an excuse for her.
Inwardly, she's crying! She thought that she already has someone who see her worth when her grandma said those words earlier before dinner and when she heard Nanny Min's words about grandma's eagerness to have a girl as a grandchild but everything is a facade.
She stood up without finishing her meal as well as without allowing her father to decline her friend's invitation.
She headed towards her room. She locked herself up and reminiscing the memories of her mother. Her mother is a Military General. She left them behind because that time, her mother decided to go to Country P in order to find her parents but the yacht exploded! She just have the solo picture of her mother who was dressed up as a military general while holding hands with her father.
Every time she felt sad, she looked at the picture and imagined her mother's warmth embrace.
She packed her things but the door opened and her twin brother is leaning on the door frame.
"Where are you going?" he asked with heavy tone like she doesn't belong to Reinhold Family.
"To my friend" she casually replied.
"Friend? You just have arrived so I know that you don't have a friend here" Andrew heavily replied like a policeman interrogating a suspect.
"And so what?"
Andrew frowned. He doesn't know why his twin sister is getting far away from him. He didn't do anything wrong except being wary of her if she decided on seizing the position as heir because of her grandma's warnings.
Ever since the Reinhold Family announced him as heir, his twin sister is getting farther away from him. He wanted to ask her why but her grandma told him about the seizing-heir position incident of many aristocrat families and suspected that his twin sister is jealous and mad at him. From then on, his wariness heightened until without realizing that Aubrey felt that she doesn't belong to Reinhold Family anymore.
After saying 'so-what', it rains cats and dogs outside. She looked up the sky. It is dark like her gloomy life.
"You couldn't attend the pajama party anymore. It rains outside" he also looked up the sky then diverted his eyes towards his twin sister. He was stunned to her eyes are lifeless. He stared at her longer and had a good look on childish little angelic face of Aubrey. It was almost perfect if only she smiles, it will be a real perfect picture of an angel.
Aubrey felt Andrew's gaze and she looked at his eyes. Her widened when she saw confusion, sadness and worries within those eyes.
"Elder Brother..." she called.
Andrew came back to normal after hearing her call.
"If... Only if... If I am boy, will they ever look at me like the way you look at me right now? Will they know my worth as their child, but not as a tool for business nor suspect of seizing the position as heir? Will they no longer forget me?" she asked expressionlessly like her mouth have its own mind.
Andrew was stunned! This is the first time that his twin sister opened up to him. Her voice and words are full of sadness and longing for real affection of a family.
He was silent. He couldn't answer his question because he also doesn't know the answer. All he knows that, he should be wary of his twin sister but her wariness was shakened after hearing those questions.
Then, Aubrey smiled at him. "Andrew, I don't want the position as heir. I'm still a child who should be innocent of cruelty of the world but mind matured because of people around me" she expressed her thoughts and feelings.
His mouth wanted to speak but swallowed down. Then, he realized that his twin sister was abandoned and he's one of those people who abandoned her. He felt heavy on his chest and his eyes almost moist but held on.
"Andrew, is it difficult to see me as sister and not as your enemy for heir position?" she asked again but her tone was expressionless.
He wanted to answer it but no words came out of his mouth.
And, she smiles again. "What I wanted to become is like mother. She's strong and brave. There was also a woman who saved me when I was kidnapped. I was weak that time so I couldn't see her face but I heard her worried but warmth voice. I wanted to become the strongest woman in the world and use the strength to save the victims. I'll use logical reasoning to save the suspects but punished the real criminals. I wanted to become like that, Andrew. So, have you ever think I would seize the heir position with this mindset?"
His eyes widened! "What?! You want to be a soldier?! No! You're not allowed to take mother's footsteps!" he exclaimed.
"Then, you also wanted me to become who I don't want. to be?" she asked while seriously looked straightly to his eyes.
"You can take the other professions but being a soldier is a big NO!" he angrily exclaimed.
Just by imagining that his twin sister is taking the path of a soldier, he felt painful inside his heart. He knows what happened to their mother. She was a soldier with a position of Military General. She was murdered by bombing the yacht she was using towards Country P.
He doesn't want that to happen to his twin sister. Now, he realized that he doesn't want to lose her after losing their mother.
He immediately hugged her tightly while tearing up. "What should I do in order to keep you safe?" he asked shamelessly. He didn't even realize that he is the sole reason why she felt isolated in Reinhold Family. For the first time, she felt the warmth of having an elder brother.
"Just manage the family business and become my huge backer" she said jokingly but she doesn't know that her words became his strength to success in the business industry.
He hummed as an approval as he take it seriously. His turned cold and matured overnight. His grandma's warnings about Aubrey seizing the heir position.
"It is time to sleep. You should head back. If stay any longer, they might notice you here" she said and broke from the hug. She smiled brightly because, finally, she felt warmth from his twin brother.
"Okay. You should also sleep. We still have to hold the wishing well tradition" he reminded and stroke her head like she's a cat.
"Elder Brother, is there really a heavenly punishment?" she asked. Now, she worried of how the ceremony turned out.
"No, there is no record on family library about heavenly punishment. But for your sake, I will check it out" he said and turned around. He left her room.
His face showed coldness and anyone could sense his aura being bloodthirsty. He headed towards the family library and decided to stay there for tonight.
Aubrey shut her eyes and sleep. Inside her dreams, she gained overwhelming strength that no human could contend with, even the military armaments unless being fired by nuclear power.
She even drooled because of how her dreams being played out according to her wishes without checking her appearance on the mirror. She was about to check herself on the mirror when suddenly a voice came from far distance woke her up.
"Young Miss Aubrey, the breakfast is ready" the maid who usually called her, said.
"Okay" she casually said while trying yo recall of what kind of dreams she had because she felt refresh and happy inside but whatever is that dream, she decided to set it aside.
In the dining table, everyone is already present and she's usually the late one to come over.
"It looks like you have a good dream" her father said while seeing his daughter smiles widely.
She nodded but frowned, "But this is the first time I have forgotten about the content of my dreams. You also know that I have photographic memory which is easily for me to remember but strangely, I couldn't remember my dream" she replied while contemplating why was it.
"Is it a bad thing?" Grandma Amy asked. Usually, she will stay silent every time Aubrey speaks but this time, her tone turned gentle like she's suppressing her venomous tongue.
"Yes, it is a bad thing, Grandma. Because having a photographic memory makes the bearer remember every single details of the things she senses like seeing once of the books arrangement in the bookshelves but after an hour, the books are arranged differently. She could easily tell it like that but if she couldn't, there is nothing wrong with her senses nor memory. It just happened which is the strangest thing for photographic bearer" Andrew simply explained.
"Do you want to have a check-up?'Grandpa France asked but Aubrey shook her head. His face showed how worried he is.
"When I woke up, I already smiled widely like I have din something victorious so it is not a big deal" she replied.
"Alright"
"I invited the Conrad Family tonight because you showed interest on their second son, Cedric. Usually, the Conrad Family would reject invitations if it is related to family's tradition or culture but this time they accepted it" Grandma Amy said calmly like it is a normal thing but for men like her father, brother and grandpa, it has deep meaning.
"Why have they accepted the invitation? I suspected that they are also showing interest to Aubrey" her father asked and said. His face showed annoyance. Aubrey felt amused of how triad reacted. Isn't it only staring and greeting? Why is it becoming a big deal?
"How did you meet the Conrad's?" Andrew asked while his one brow rose up. Aubrey wanted to laugh.
"We just greeted each other when they saw on the balcony of my room, staring at them" she replied calmly without showing her amusement.
"It looks like Frederick's son fancied our Aubrey" Grandpa France teased to ease the tension because Aubrey is on the hot seat!
"Now, now... Let's prepare for the ceremony tonight" Andrew diverted their attention to the wishing well tradition.
"I already prepare the traditional clothes of our ancestors appropriate for the ceremony" Grandma Amy stated.
"At exactly nine o'clock in the morning, you have to kneel down in front of our ancestor's stone tablet until four o'clock before dusk and proceed to the wishing well to make a wish. You should say it three times loudly. After that, you should for a sign."
"The sign depends on each member of the family. Your father's sign was fire. The candles at that time suddenly lit up. His wish was to become successful businessman."
"Your grandpa's sign was a bird screeching loudly and landed on his shoulder. His wish was to have healthy lifestyle. Ever since then, he wasn't visited clinics nor hospitals. If he does, it showed that he's very healthy"
"Your twin brother's sign was a shooting stars, his wish was to support the strongest person in the world through our business empire but he must firstly lead the corporation into an empire"
Grandma Amy stated the almost impossible wishes. Yes, it sounds easy from my father's mouth but the competitors were scheming to drag him down but before the scheme happened, father found it out like there was someone keep on sending him warnings in his dream but he didn't believe it came from guardian of wishing well. He believed that he has a guardian angel guarding him from evil. The same happened to his grandpa.
For his twin brother, his wish is impossible unless she is that person because she wanted to become the strongest woman in the world and also suggested him to become her backer. Is it coincident? I said those words without knowing his wish back then.
